How do I properly wash and take care of my Shomota pads?
We have a handy illustrated instruction sheet that shows you how you can take care of washing your pads by hand, which is the way we recommend washing them. But, if you would like to use a machine to wash your pads all you have to do is a pre-rinse or soak and then throw it in the wash with the rest of your things.
What is the benefit to the environment if I switch to Shomota pads?
It is estimated that an average woman will go through approximately 160 disposable pads or tampons each year. This creates an astronomical amount of waste and each disposable pad can take hundreds of years to disintegrate. Also the chemicals and dioxins in the conventional disposable pads are harming to the soil and water surrounding us.
What are the different types of Shomota pads?
Please go to Our Pads section and you will get detailed information on the different pads we have available. In general, we have our Kamini line which are a traditional wing, all in one pad. The Kamini’s come in light, medium, medium plus, heavy and heavy plus. We also carry Gada and Poddo lines which are pocket pads. The pockets allow a folded insert to be placed inside, which can be changed without changing the whole pad. This allows women to save money and makes it easier to wash. The pocket pads were designed with woman from marginalized communities in mind.
Why should I use Shomota pads instead of disposables?
The conventional disposable pads can cause many problems to your health and the health of the environment. These pads are made of plastic (equivalent to four plastic bags!) and they use harmful chemicals in the process of production. These pads are also harmful to the environment when they are either disposed of, taking hundreds of years to disintegrate, or incinerated, releasing the chemicals to the environment. So an alternative to walking around wearing plastic, covered in chemicals, would be to use cloth pads or a menstrual cup. Our cloth pads are made with 100% cotton, so they are comfortable and chemical free. They are also made to last at least 4-5 years, drastically reducing the amount of waste created by disposable pads.
How long will Shomota pads last?
When taken care of properly with the recommended instructions your pads should last at least 4-5 years. That being said, many have found that they can use cloth pads way past the 5 year mark.
How often should I change my Shomota pad?
Every menstrual cycle is different and you know your own cycle better than anyone. How often you change your pad is dependent on your flow, but we recommend every 3-6 hours.
Can Shomota pads be used for urinary incontinence?
Our light or medium pads can be used for mild incontinence. Without a waterproof barrier they are breathable and can be worn on an everyday basis.
Can Shomota pads be used for post-partum?
Any of our heavy or heavy plus pads can be used for post-partum. They all come with a waterproof barrier to keep you dry. Also if you’re looking for a cooling effect, feel free to put your pad in the freezer for a few hours before using them. You can even soak them in herbs and essential oils before putting them in the freezer.
